Pergola Questions
What is a Pergola?
A pergola is a “garden walk or terrace typically formed by two rows of columns or posts roofed with an open framework of beams and cross rafters over which plants are trained. Its purpose is to provide a foundation on which climbing plants can be viewed and to give shade. Known in ancient Egypt, pergolas were a common feature of early Renaissance gardens in Italy and subsequently throughout Europe. They had a marked revival during the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain.” (Encyclopedia Britannica)
The architectural integrity of our timberframe pergolas stem from the mortise and tenon construction. A genuine timberframe pergola adorning your landscape shows that you value timeless beauty and technique over modern efficency.
What is Timberframing?
Timberframe joinery enables our pergolas to be solidly constructed without the aid of metal fasteners. Timber framing uses the centuries-old craft of interlocking timbers using mortise and tenon joinery secured with oak wooden pegs. Unlike lumber-yard pergolas that are constructed using standard wood sizes and metal fasteners found at most lumberyards, we use the highest quality materials and time-honored techniques.
The structural components of each of our pergolas follow traditional timberframe design. A timberframe pergola’s structure is composed of a number of bents (sets of columnsand tie beams supported by knee braces). A pair of bents encloses a bay. A simple pergola has one bay bounded by a pair of two column bents.
Do you build custom Pergolas?
Yes. All our pergolas are built custom to our client’s desires and requirments of the landscape. We will work with home owners and architects to meet the needs of the project.
