What is your process of choosing wood?

Wood is an organism...it changes, it swells and shrinks, and the color fades or intensifies. We search for pieces of wood that will stand and even become enhanced at the onslaught of time and weather.

Do you build custom pergolas?

All our pergolas are custom to your requirements. Our standard design and options are just a launching point. If you require a certain size, feature or configuration we will work with you or your architect to meet your needs. Just email, fax or call us.

Do you build pergolas that use construction techniques other than mortise and tenon?

A pergola is a historical tradition...so with us, it's all about timberframe construction. A historically crafted pergola is architecturally significant because it is stronger, since handpicked wood is intertwined, chiseled, and joined with careful fitting. The strength of this process offers substantial architecture, bringing endless years of service...a pergola to serve you with skilled structure providing strength for vining growth and decorative botanical grace. Many vendors offer non-timberframed garden structures since few possess the expertise to provide the craftsmanship required to keep the historical tradition of the timber framed pergola.

What types of wood do you use?

We search for and demand the best grades of Western
Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Coastal Redwood, Cypress and others for our handcrafted timberframe pergolas. To learn more about these wood species as lumber visit the following associations:

Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar Lumber Association

Douglas Fir

Western Wood Products Association

Coastal Redwood

California Redwood Association

Cypress

Southern Cypress Manufacturers Association

Do you use metal fasteners?

Timberframe joinery enables wooden structures to be solidly constructed without the aid of metal fasteners. Timber framing uses the centuries-old craft of interlocking timbers using mortise and tenon joints secured with oak wooden pegs. No metal is utilized as fasteners in our pergolas.

Do you install?

Our pergolas are shipped across the United States and Canada. At this time, we do not have a network of installers available to recommend. Any licensed contractor will be able to work with you to ensure that your pergola is installed to meet state and local building codes. We can arrange for installation in the North West area of Oregon State.

How do you ship?

Before each pergola is shipped, every element of the pergola structure is thoroughly checked for quality, size, shape and fit. Each piece of the pergola structure is carefully packaged in a wooden crate and arrives on a commercial common carrier. Arrangements can be made for terminal and liftgate delivery.

Do you apply a finish coating to your pergolas?

Our pergolas are rough sanded leaving a timbered look to the surface of the wood. Each face is ready for the finishing coat if desired, at the new owner's location. There are many fine wood protective sealers and coatings available on the market. At this time, we do not recommend a particular brand of wood sealer or finish coating. An excellent resource for wood finishing can be found at the U.S. Forest Service Wood Finishing website here.
